Italian Natural Marbles

The term "Marble" is derived from the Latin word "Marmar" which itself comes from the Greek root "Marmarous" meaning thereby a shining stone. Technically, marble is a recrystallised (metamorphosed) limestone. In commercial terms, marble is any crystalline rock composed predominantly of calcite, dolomite or serpentine, having 3-4 hardness, which can be excavated as blocks and can be sawn into marble slabs and marble tiles.

Marble slabs and marble tiles should take good polish. Amongst the various building stones, marble slabs and marble tiles occupy an unique position. Since time immemorial, marble slabs and marble tiles have been used in temples, mosques, palaces, and homes. Marble is also a popular ornamental and decorative stone because of its pleasing colors, attractive patterns and designs. Suitability of marble slabs and marble tiles for any purpose does not depend on chemical composition or genetic aspect, but on physical and aesthetic properties - color, shade, luster, grain and texture. Marble is used for wall cladding, roofing and flooring and a variety of other interior and exterior applications. India is an important producer of marble blocks and processed marble slabs and marble tiles. Marble from leading Indian exporters is listed here.
